Fighting Heat and Hunger, $1 at a Time

Was it a scorcher this summer, or what? Rochester, NY saw its hottest summer yet, breaking 184 year old records with 22 days hitting 90 degree temperatures or higher – the average is only 9 – so CaterTrax came up with a creative way to fight the heat while giving back to the community. Every Friday this summer, concluding with the Friday before Labor Day, employees were given the option to wear shorts if they made a $1 donation.

This “Shorts on Fridays” fundraiser benefited Foodlink, whose mission is to end hunger and leverage the power of food to build a healthier community. Shorts are not part of the CaterTrax dress code so many individuals took advantage of the opportunity to fight the heat and hunger each week. One Friday, an anonymous CaterTrax employee even donated $1 for each staff member so everyone could participate. Since many had already planned to give their $1 to rock shorts around the office anyways, donations still rolled in despite already being covered.

In total, employees raised $395, and with a 20% match from CaterTrax we were able to give $474 to Foodlink! Annie Murphy, Business Administration Coordinator shared that “This was a really ‘cool’ way to make a meaningful difference in the community.” Thank you to all who participated!
